This case study is focused on the implementation of a water management program (WMP) for sterile processing at Lakeview Hospital to address ongoing challenges related to water quality.
Lakeview Hospital is a 98-Bed, Short Term Acute Care facility with an in-house sterile processing department. While a WMP had been in place at the facility since 2018, it was not until 2021 that the water management team (WMT) finally addressed the “squeaky wheel” that was the sterile processing department (SPD). The SPD had been facing challenges that manifested
in the form of hard water deposits on equipment, pipe walls, and of course surgical instruments.
The instrument staining resulted in:
• Hand cleaning of every instrument which caused lower SPD output, staining on equipment washers and other equipment that needed to be replaced annually
• Clogged water lines
• Detergents/chemicals not working properly
• Additional downtime in equipment for maintenance
