Foundation Scholarships

To help advance patient safety, the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) created the HSPA Foundation, the Association's 501(c)(3) philanthropic organization. The IAHCSMM Foundation's primary mission is to provide valuable education and support to Sterile Processing professionals through educational initiatives, research, scholarships, professional development grants, and awards.

Betty Hanna Foundation Scholarship

2021 Scholarship Opportunity

The HSPA Foundation has established a scholarship on behalf of former Executive Director, Betty Hanna. Hanna was a true pioneer in the profession and served as HSPA (formerly 'IAHCSMM') Executive Director for 48 years. She was an integral part of the Association since its inception in 1958 and her more than 50-years history was a testament to her commitment to serving and supporting Sterile Processing professionals worldwide and ensuring that the organization met and exceeded those professionals' ongoing needs on all fronts—from education to certification. She strongly encouraged individuals to continue their education and pursue professional advancement opportunities.

This scholarship will provide $2,000 in educational assistance to a student seeking to pursue a secondary or graduate degree in the healthcare field. The scholarship can be used toward tuition and/or course materials.

To apply, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be a member of HSPA;
  2. Be enrolled in an accredited program at the time of application, and provide documentation of admission and recent transcript; and
  3. Have successfully completed at least one course (C grade or better) at time of application and show proof of completion (required for undergraduate applicants only).

Completed applications are due by 12 p.m. CST on October 15, 2021. Selection reviews and candidate interviews will be completed by December 2021.

2020 Recipient

The IAHCSMM Foundation Board is pleased to announce that Kyree Thomas, MBA, CRCST, CIS, CER, CHL, Central Sterile Processing Manager at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, Georgia, was selected as the recipient of the 2020 Betty Hanna Scholarship.

She holds a Master of Business Administration in Healthcare Management degree from Liberty University and is working to create positive change within the Sterile Processing profession.

The IAHCSMM Foundation established this scholarship in 2020 on behalf of IAHCSMM’s former Executive Director, Betty Hanna, who served in the role for 48 years. The scholarship provides $2,000 in educational assistance to a student seeking to pursue a secondary or graduate degree in the healthcare field.
