Joseph Avila Biography

What value would you bring to the ongoing efforts of HSPA as a Board member of the organization?

Having worked in an array of settings from ambulatory surgical centers (ACS) to Level 1 Trauma/Academic Centers, I have gained a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing the Sterile Processing industry. I have also developed strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills that I have applied in my current role as a Regional Sterile Processing Director at Memorial Hermann Health System. I have successfully led a team of over 200 technicians across my campuses (both FTE and contracted labor), implemented quality improvement initiatives, ensured compliance with standards and regulations, and fostered collaboration with other departments and stakeholders.

I believe that the HSPA Board of Directors is a strategic and influential body that can shape the future of the Sterile Processing profession and the association. I would like to contribute to the Board’s vision, mission and goals by bringing my insights, ideas and enthusiasm. I would also like to learn from other Board members and staff who are dedicated and talented leaders in the field. I think that serving on the Board would be a rewarding and enriching experience for me, and I would be honored and excited to do so.

How would you support the current mission of HSPA?

I would support HSPA’s current mission through education, professional development, certification, and communication. I would also look to learn from best practices and technological advancements in the field of Sterile Processing and share them with my peers and colleagues.

In addition, I would promote the Sterile Processing profession on international, national, state, and local levels and support the issues that advance the profession and patient safety. I would also raise awareness and recognition for the vital role that Sterile Processing professionals play in the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care.

I would collaborate with other members, associates, allied partners, and stakeholders of HSPA and contribute to the association’s publications and social media platforms. I would also supply feedback and suggestions to the Board of Directors and the staff of HSPA on how to improve the association’s services and support offerings.
